Rizvi: Government agents vandalized DU VC’s residence

The riot took place despite the presence of law enforcers and no arrests were made. This attack was premeditated,’ alleges the BNP leader.

Bangladesh Nationalist party (BNP) Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has accused the government of involvement in the attack on Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor’s (VC) residence.

He claimed that this was done by agents of the ruling party to divert attention from the students’ peaceful protests against the quote system in government jobs.

At a press conference held at BNP’s central office in Naya Paltan, he said: “The general people are curious why such violent intervention by government agents was necessary when it was merely a peaceful protest. Within 10 minutes of a prominent Awami League leader entering the DU premises, the riot ensued.

“The riot took place despite the presence of law enforcers and no arrests were made. This attack was premeditated,” he added.

He also said, “The campus was kept under siege by armed Chhatra League activists. Only they are capable of terrorising and vandalising in this manner.”

“This attack on students demanding quota reform by the police and Chhatra League members is reminiscent of the attack on Dhaka University by the Pakistani Army in 1971. Students have been attacked by rubber bullets, teargas shells, and some students were seen writhing in pain and covered in blood. The general population is therefore looking upon this incident with horror,” Rizvi said.

He also blamed the government for not allowing proper treatment for BNP leader, Khaleda Zia, stating that even when the government medical board has approved an orthopaedic bed for her, it has not been arranged.

“Despite High Court granting her bail, it has been stayed by the government. We demand the prompt release of Begum Zia,” he said.

Abdus Salam Azad, assistant organizational editor, Taiful Islam Tipu, BNP’s assistant office secretary, etc., were present at the press conference.
