Two arrested over allegedly sexual harassment of JU student in Dhaka

‘A case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act has been filed and the matter is under investigation.’

Police arrested two persons for allegedly assaulting and sexually harassing a female student of Jahangirnagar University (JU) in Dhaka’s Shyamoli area on Sunday.

The arrestees have been identified as Shawon, 25, and his sister-in-law Sumi Begum, 35. They are both street hawkers, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station OC Ganesh Gopal Biswas told the Dhaka Tribune.

“A case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act has been filed and the matter is under investigation,” he said.

Ganesh said: “The Anthropology Department student of JU came to Shyamoli around 11:30am on a visa related work.”

“Shawon had hurled abusive words at the student when she was crossing the Mirpur Road near the foot over-bridge at Shyamoli Bus Stand. As she protested, Shawon and Sumi, a tea seller in the area, beat her up following an altercation.”

“Police later arrested them after receiving a complaint from the student.” the OC added.
